Automakers and their advertising agencies can market compact sedans in one of several ways. They can target the young adult commuter, or they can focus on fuel efficiency. Even better than this, they can produce a vehicle that is loaded with standard features yet carries a rather introductory compact car price tag. That's a good way to describe the Hyundai Elantra. It's been around for many years, and its success is primarily based on its affordability.
Even though it's at the low end of the compact sedan price scale, the 2018 Elantra offers much, but there are some key differences in the trims. Two of these trims are the Sport and the Limited, and it's certainly worth checking out both of these Elantra versions. Below, a closer look is given to these two popular trim levels.
Engine and Powertrain
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra Limited trim is powered by a four-cylinder, 2.0L engine. Total output is 147 horsepower. Automatic transmission is the only option on the Limited. Acceleration is acceptable, but drag racing is out of the question. Nonetheless, the Limited handles well, and steering is very precise. The Sport trim comes with its own engine, a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder rated at 201 horsepower. This engine can be paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Sport is livelier to drive and has better suspension than the Limited. The Sport also comes with 18-inch wheels, and it is better suited to the curves and twists of the winding highway than the other Elantra trims. It also has stronger brakes and has a shorter stopping distance than the Limited version.
Both the Sport and Limited trims are designed pretty much the same way on the inside. The main difference is that the Sport comes with a sunroof as standard equipment. A flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather-upholstered and heated front seats, and a slightly different configuration of the gauge cluster also sets the Sport apart from the more conservative interior found on the Limited. The Limited must be purchased with a special package in order to get the sunroof, but it does have dual-zone climate control, something that is lacking on the Sport unless a special package is ordered. Both trims feature a power driver's seat, USB ports, and the Hyundai Blue Link system.
Both the 2018 Hyundai Sport and Limited trims are equipped with a full set of airbags, the LATCH system of child safety seat anchors and tethers, and a rearview camera. Both can be purchased with the special Limited Ultimate Package. This package includes a full set of driver aids including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and intervention, and forward collision alert with emergency automatic braking. The aforementioned Blue Link system comes with a complete diagnostics program that constantly monitors performance and alerts the drive when problems are detected.
Both trims can be styled up a bit through the inclusion of appearance packages, but to get a better idea of how they compare, take them both for a test drive. At Pohanka Hyundai of Capitol Heights, MD, the 2018 Elantra Limited and Sport are waiting for you on the dealer lot, and upon close inspection, you'll know which trim suits your needs and personal taste.
