The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is a compact car that boasts class-leading amenities. Having a full-size body, the 2018 Hyundai Sonata is a premium sedan that comes in six trims. Both vehicles offer turbocharged engines and multiple transmission systems. An 8.0-inch navigation system, Blue Link and wireless charging are available in the modern cockpits of these cars. Hyundai has added several new safety features to the 2019 Elantra, such as the Safe Exit Assist.

The 2019 Elantra retains the same powertrain options from the previous year. Displacing 2.0 L, the naturally aspirated I-4 engine produces just less than 150 horsepower and more than 130 pound-feet. Producing approximately 130 hp and slightly under 160 lb-ft, a 1.4 L turbocharged engine propels the Eco model. The Sport trim is driven by a 1.6 L turbo engine that whips out just above 200 hp and up to 195 lb-ft. Rated at 185 hp, a 2.4 L naturally aspirated engine is installed in four of the 2018 Sonata trims. The Eco model runs on a twin-scroll turbo engine that yields 178 hp and 195 lb-ft. Twin scrolls also power the Limited 2.0T+'s powertrain, which delivers up to 245 hp and 260 lb-ft. Both cars offer a six-speed manual transmission and the SHIFTRONIC six-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the EcoShift transmission is available in these Hyundai models. Running on dual clutches, this high-performance transmission generates seven gear speeds.

Active Safety

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is an all-new driving aide that's available in the 2019 Elantra. This cutting-edge technology replaces the Automatic Emergency Braking from the previous year, which is also optional in the 2018 Sonata. The Safe Exit Assist is another great addition to the 2019 Elantra's accident-avoidance technology. A class-exclusive amenity, the Drive Attention Warning detects drowsy driving. You'll notice several other familiar safety features in the Elantra, such as the Smart Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist. The Blind-Spot Collision Warning is similar to the Sonata's Blind Spot Detection. Additionally, the Cross-Traffic Collision Warning is an updated version of the Sonata's Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Both sedans have rear view cameras and automatic headlights. The Dynamic Bending Lights are also available in the Sonata.

Tech Features

The 2019 Elantra offers an 8-inch GPS navigation system with data services by SiriusXM NavTraffic and NavWeather. Also measuring 8 inches diagonally, the navigation system in the 2018 Sonata comes with the HERE HD Traffic service. Both sedans support Google Maps and other Google applications on Android Auto. Apple Maps and other iOS apps could be imported to the infotainment system through the Apple CarPlay hub. Offering remote connectivity and security, several of the Blue Link services are available in both cars. USB ports, Bluetooth and wireless charging are some other mobile-ready amenities that are installed in the cockpits. Playing HD Radio and SiriusXM, a 10-speaker audio system by Infinity produces up to 400 acoustic watts inside the Sonata.
