Are you contemplating making the switch to an all-electric vehicle? If so, two that might have caught your attention are the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4. We here at Pohanka Hyundai of Capitol Heights assembled this detailed comparison of these two electric compact SUVs to showcase why we believe the IONIQ 5 comes out on top in both features and capability.
Performance
Built on Hyundai’s e-GMP Platform, the IONIQ 5 is exceptionally efficient, offering a maximum EPA-estimated range of 318 miles1. The ID.4, using Volkswagen’s MEB platform, won’t last quite as long before needing a recharge, as its EPA-estimated range tops out at 291 miles2. You can fill the IONIQ 5's battery faster once you do need to stop as well, going from 10 percent to 80 percent in as little as 20 minutes3 at a DC fast charging station, compared to the ID.4's rate of 28 minutes. Both vehicles are quite nimble in their standard RWD configurations and also offer AWD for those searching for extra traction on I-495. However, you’ll get less range when you choose this option for the ID.4, which hits its limit at 263 miles compared to the IONIQ 5’s 290-mile maximum1. If you're a more adventurous driver, you'll appreciate the IONIQ 5's available raised, uniquely tuned trail-ready suspension. This ID.4 does not offer a similar setup.
Interior
While both these electric SUVs offer a variety of amenities, the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 excels thanks to comforts such as its standard 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. The ID.4’s standard seating option is only 6-way manually adjustable. Hyundai’s vehicle also provides a more vibrant interior, with 64-color ambient lighting available. The ID.4 offers a similar available function, but only provides up to 30 color options. One of the IONIQ 5’s more unique features is its available Relaxation Comfort Seat, which reclines and elevates your feet at the push of a button. This option is not present in the ID.4. It does, however, join the IONIQ 5 in delivering an available ventilation function for the driver and passenger to help cool off during a cruise through the University of Maryland’s campus.
Safety
Peace of mind is at a premium on the streets of College Park, and Hyundai SmartSense is outfitted on the IONIQ 5 to provide it in abundance. It includes an available Blind-Spot View Monitor4, which displays a live video feed of your intended destination when you signal a lane change. This feature is not present in the ID.4’s IQ.DRIVE® safety suite. SmartSense is also more equipped to help you navigate challenging parking situations, with the standard forward and reverse Parking Distance Warnings5 alerting you if you get too close to an object. The Volkswagen model lacks this feature, but it does match the IONIQ 5’s standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist6 functionality with its standard Rear Traffic Alert7 system. Both of these features warn you when a car or motorcycle is passing behind you as you reverse and can apply the brakes to prevent an accident. Now that you understand why we believe the IONIQ 5 should be your first choice between these two EVs, experience the difference yourself by scheduling a test drive!

1. EPA-estimated 318 mile driving range for 2025 IONIQ 5 SE/SEL/Limited RWD; 290 mile driving range for 2025 IONIQ 5 SE/SEL AWD; 269 mile driving range for 2025 IONIQ 5 Limited AWD; 259 mile driving range for 2025 IONIQ 5 XRT AWD; and 245 mile driving range for 2025 IONIQ 5 SE RWD (Standard Range). All figures are EPA estimates and based on a fully charged battery. For comparison purposes only. Battery capacity decreases with time and use. Actual range will vary based on a number of factors, including vehicle options, driving conditions and habits, vehicle and battery's condition, battery temperature and outside temperature.
2. 2025 ID.4 Pro EPA estimated total range is 291 miles. Actual mileage and range will vary and depend on several factors including driving and charging habits, accessory use, temperature and topography, battery age, load, and vehicle condition. Battery capacity decreases with time and use. See owner’s manual for details.
3. Approximately 20 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% on a 350-kW, 800V DC ultra-fast charger using the CCS adapter included with the 2025 IONIQ 5. Actual charging time varies based on a number of factors, including current battery charge level, output of the charging unit, vehicle and battery settings, battery temperature and outside temperature. Ultra-fast charging stations are provided by independent companies and availability is not guaranteed.
4. Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) assists driver in changing lanes by providing a live view of the blind spots on either side of the vehicle and an audible alert if another vehicle is detected. Turn signal must be activated and other system limitations apply. Do not rely exclusively on BVM. It is the driver's responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
5. Do not rely exclusively on Parking Distance Warning. Parking Distance Warning is a supplemental system and the driver must still be attentive and exercise caution when parking. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
6. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) can alert the driver of a potential collision by providing an audible warning and/or applying braking. RCCA is active when the vehicle is in reverse and operating at low speeds. Never rely exclusively on RCCA. RCCA cannot prevent all collisions and may not provide alerts or braking in all conditions. Always look over your shoulder and use your mirrors to confirm rear clearance. There are limitations to the function, detection, range and clarity of the system. See Owner's Manual for further details and limitations.
7. The features discussed are not substitutes for attentive driving. See Owner's Manual for further details, and important limitations.

“ ★★★★★ You’ll Want to Read This One to the End In June, my daughter was involved in an accident caused by an uninsured driver, and her car was totaled. Understandably, we were anxious to find a replacement as quickly as possible. We considered Mazda, Toyota, Honda, Ford, and Hyundai. After test-driving the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited, my daughter knew it was the vehicle she wanted. Since we live in Fairfax, we contacted and visited nearly every Hyundai dealership in Northern Virginia searching for a white Tucson Hybrid Limited with a gray interior. Unfortunately, several dealerships told us over the phone that they had the vehicle, only for us to arrive and hear that it had “just sold”—or, in some cases, learn that they had never had it at all and were simply trying to get us into the showroom. Sheehy Hyundai was the most disappointing. They assured us they had the vehicle, but after we made the drive and explained the exact color combination we wanted, they quickly dismissed us when they realized it was not on their lot. Every dealership seemed interested only in selling us something they already had in inventory. That completely changed when we arrived at Pohanka Hyundai. Rod warmly welcomed us and genuinely listened to what we were looking for: a white Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited with a gray interior. Instead of trying to convince us to settle for another vehicle, Rod and Luis Lemus immediately went to work locating the exact Tucson my daughter wanted. Within 30 minutes, they told us they had found one and could have it ready for us that evening. My daughter completed the paperwork and applied for 100% financing online. When we returned that evening, the vehicle was ready. We completed the transaction with Joann Nolta in approximately 10 minutes, and Rod was waiting out front to personally deliver the car. The entire process was professional, efficient, honest, and completely stress-free. Rod, Luis, and Joann turned what had been a frustrating search into one of the easiest car-buying experiences we have ever had. I wish buying a new vehicle were this simple at every dealership. Pohanka Hyundai truly earned this five-star review. ”
