*Vehicle shown above (on the right) is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata with LED Daytime Running Lights and optional equipment.

When on the road the welfare and protection of your loved ones in the backseat is all that matters. That’s why the 2017 Hyundai Sonata provides you with amazing safety features available to ensure that, no matter the challenges, you are always shielded from harm. Here, at Pohanka Hyundai of Capitol Heights, we have compiled the latest and greatest that the fabulous Sonata has to offer.

When it comes to safety, the 2017 Sonata does not cut corners. As standard, you’ll have a 7-airbag safety system1, ABS with Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Management, Electronic Stability Control, a Traction Control System, and a Driver’s blind spot mirror. In addition, whenever Blue Link® Connected Care2 senses an airbag has deployed, the Automatic Collision Notification and Assistance feature notifies the appropriate response center to quickly assist you. Blue Link® Connected Care2 is included as a complimentary trial for one year on most Hyundai vehicles. It will also provide you with SOS Emergency Assistance and Enhanced Roadside Assistance, when prompted by the driver with a press of a button. Another standard feature is the Rearview Camera, which conveniently displays what lies behind you as you back out from your garage or parking space.

The Hyundai Sonata also offers a myriad of high-tech drive assist systems to help you prevent and mitigate possible accidents. The Automatic Emergency Braking3 system utilizes a camera and radar sensor to activate and apply full brake-force stopping power from 5 to 50 mph automatically whenever it detects an imminent collision and the driver fails to react. Blind Spot Detection4 with Rear Cross-traffic Alert5 and Lane Change Assist6  is a combo that provides the driver with visible and audible alerts whenever reversing or changing lanes, in order to warn him/her of approaching vehicles. For its part, the Lane Departure Warning7 will give you an audible and a visual cue when you drift outside of your lane without using your signal. Meanwhile, rear parking sensors8 make parallel parking effortless, thanks to distance sensors embedded into the rear bumper.

Other clever features available are the Dynamic Bending Lights, which tilts the headlights in the direction in which you turn the steering wheel, in order to illuminate what lies around the bend or keep your path visible when driving down a sinuous highway. Smart Cruise Control with stop/start capability9 allows you to keep a preset speed on the road, while adjusting velocity and distance whenever a vehicle is detected ahead of you, even stopping completely if necessary.

Driving with the 2017 Hyundai Sonata safety features in Capitol Heights, MD, is like having a guardian angel with you at all times. Visit us at Pohanka Hyundai of Capitol Heights to learn more about the Sonata and take it for a spin. Our attentive staff will be more than pleased to assist you. Stop by today!

★★★★★ You’ll Want to Read This One to the End In June, my daughter was involved in an accident caused by an uninsured driver, and her car was totaled. Understandably, we were anxious to find a replacement as quickly as possible. We considered Mazda, Toyota, Honda, Ford, and Hyundai. After test-driving the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited, my daughter knew it was the vehicle she wanted. Since we live in Fairfax, we contacted and visited nearly every Hyundai dealership in Northern Virginia searching for a white Tucson Hybrid Limited with a gray interior. Unfortunately, several dealerships told us over the phone that they had the vehicle, only for us to arrive and hear that it had “just sold”—or, in some cases, learn that they had never had it at all and were simply trying to get us into the showroom. Sheehy Hyundai was the most disappointing. They assured us they had the vehicle, but after we made the drive and explained the exact color combination we wanted, they quickly dismissed us when they realized it was not on their lot. Every dealership seemed interested only in selling us something they already had in inventory. That completely changed when we arrived at Pohanka Hyundai. Rod warmly welcomed us and genuinely listened to what we were looking for: a white Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited with a gray interior. Instead of trying to convince us to settle for another vehicle, Rod and Luis Lemus immediately went to work locating the exact Tucson my daughter wanted. Within 30 minutes, they told us they had found one and could have it ready for us that evening. My daughter completed the paperwork and applied for 100% financing online. When we returned that evening, the vehicle was ready. We completed the transaction with Joann Nolta in approximately 10 minutes, and Rod was waiting out front to personally deliver the car. The entire process was professional, efficient, honest, and completely stress-free. Rod, Luis, and Joann turned what had been a frustrating search into one of the easiest car-buying experiences we have ever had. I wish buying a new vehicle were this simple at every dealership. Pohanka Hyundai truly earned this five-star review.

NHTSA Government 5-Star Safety Ratings are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s New Car Assessment Program (www.nhtsa.gov/ratings). Model tested with standard side airbags (SAB).

*Based on model year EPA mileage ratings. Use for comparison purposes only. Your mileage will vary depending on driving conditions, how you drive and maintain your vehicle, battery pack age/condition, and other factors.

1. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is not a substitute for seatbelts, which should be worn at all times. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to work with the 3-point seatbelt system. The SRS deploys in certain frontal and/or side-impact collisions where significant injury is likely. The SRS is not a substitute for seatbelts, which should be worn at all times. Children under the age of 13 should be restrained securely in the rear seat. NEVER place a rear-facing child seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a passenger-side airbag.

2. Blue Link agents will contact existing emergency service responders. Only use Blue Link and corresponding devices when it is safe to do so. Blue Link subscription service agreement required. Features vary by subscription plan. Blue Link service works using CDMA-based cellular networks in the 50 United States. Blue Link service is not available where there is no cellular coverage, particularly in enclosed or remote areas. Service availability may be affected by signal strength, foliage, weather, topographical conditions (mountains) and nearby structures (tall buildings, tunnels) and other factors. For additional details and system limitations, visit HyundaiBlueLink.com.

3. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is designed to detect vehicles whose taillights are directly in front of the Sonata. AEB will not detect objects other than cars. AEB initiates full braking at speeds between 5 and 50 mph. AEB is not a substitute for safe driving. See Owner’s Manual for details and limitations.

4. Blind Spot Detection assists the driver by warning of other cars in the blind spot region. It senses the rear side territory of the vehicle when it is traveling over 20 mph. 4Lane Change Assist provides an audible and visual alert if the turn signal is activated and another vehicle in the blind spot is sensed. The turn signals must be activated for the Lane Change Assist to function. There are limitations to the function, range, detection and clarity of the system. It will not detect all vehicles or objects in the blind spot. Its operation depends on the size, distance, angle and relative speed difference between your car and other cars. Blind Spot Detection and Lane Change Assist may not operate if sensors are obscured in any way. Do not rely exclusively on Blind Spot Detection. Blind Spot Detection is a supplemental system and the driver must still be attentive and exercise caution when driving with it. It is important to always signal, look over your shoulder and through your mirrors before changing lanes. It is the driver’s responsibility to be aware of the surroundings and ensure it is clear before changing lanes or directions. Blind Spot Detection is only meant to assist the driver in these responsibilities.

5. The Rear Cross-traffic Alert system is designed to notify drivers of approaching cross-traffic behind the vehicle. When a vehicle is detected, it provides an audible warning and visual display warning. Rear Cross-traffic Alert is a supplemental system and the driver must still exercise extreme caution when backing up. Drivers must always turn and view oncoming traffic before backing up.

6. The Lane Departure Warning with Lane Change Assist is designed to notify the driver if the vehicle is leaving the lane of travel by audible and flashing a display signal.

7. Lane Departure Warning will not work under all circumstances. It functions when it is able to detect painted lane markings. It cannot function if the lane markings cannot be seen clearly if the lines are faded, or during dusk without headlights on, with snow, rain, sleet, dust, leaves or standing water on road, sudden changes in brightness such as shadows, tunnel exits/entrances, low sunlight angle causing reflections, multiple lane markings or criss-crossed lines, tar crack sealer and cracked or broken road surfaces. It also may not function on very rough roads, when walls, curbs or concrete barriers are close by, or if following another car too closely. Since it “sees” the lane markings using a camera in the upper windshield area, it is imperative this area be clear and free of blockage such as stickers, dirt, snow, tinting material, markings and labels. Avoid putting objects on the dashboard that may reflect light or images onto the system camera area.

8. The optional rear parking sensors are a supplemental system and not a substitute for proper backing up procedures. The system is designed to audibly warn the driver of objects 50 inches behind the vehicle. When active, the system operates when you are in reverse at up to 6 mph. System may not detect every object behind you. Always look over your shoulder and use the rearview camera and mirrors to confirm clearance. System effectiveness depends on many factors. See your owner's manual for details.

9. Smart Cruise Control (SCC) is not a collision avoidance or warning device. SCC is for highway use only and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. Driver remains responsible to slow or stop the vehicle to avoid a collision.
