2024 Hyundai SANTA CRUZ
If you're looking for a vehicle with the utility of a pickup truck but without the bulk of a traditional body-on-frame beast, the Hyundai Santa Cruz should capture your attention. Its seamless unibody construction provides the handling and refinement of a sedan or crossover, while its cargo bed offers up to 27.2 cubic feet of space, making it ideal for work or recreational purposes.
The 2024 model year marks the third go-round of the Santa Cruz, and with that Hyundai has given it some upgrades worth noting. The most significant is the introduction of the new XRT trim, which replaces the SEL Premium. Plus, all trims now have standard bi-LED projector headlights and a haptic-feedback steering wheel. The Night and XRT both come with H-Tex leatherette upholstery, while the SEL and higher trims get dual-zone automatic climate control. Finally, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system is now standard in the Night, XRT, and Limited, as well as in the optional Activity Package.
Trims, Powertrain, and Performance
The 2024 Santa Cruz is available in five trims: SE, SEL, Night, XRT, and Limited. All are accompanied by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 191 hp and 181 lb.-ft. of torque. The SE and SEL get an eight-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission, while the Night, XRT, and Limited move up to a wet dual-clutch version with paddle shifters. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard in the SE and SEL, but they can be ordered with all-wheel drive (AWD), which is standard in the Night, XRT, and Limited.
The Night, XRT, and Limited boast a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, while the SE and SEL reach their towing limit at 3,500 lb. For fuel efficiency, the FWD SE and SEL return 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while the AWD versions achieve 21 mpg city/25 mpg highway. The Night, XRT, and Limited are good for 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway.
Amenities by Trim
The base SE is nicely equipped with cloth upholstery, dual front USB ports, manually adjustable front seats, rear 60/40-split tip-up lower seat cushions, a 4.2-inch gauge cluster, a drive mode selector, automatic bi-LED projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, a multi-functional remote-release tailgate, a versatile cargo bed with storage compartments and heavy-duty D-rings, and rear bumper assist steps. The SEL adds proximity keyless entry, remote start, heated front seats (power-adjustable for the driver), push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated side mirrors with integrated turn indicators. With the available Activity Package, the SEL will be enhanced with wireless phone charging, a sunroof, a 10.25-inch gauge cluster, a 115V power outlet, rooftop side rails, a factory-installed tonneau cover with T-slot utility tracks, a dual C-channel adjustable utility track rail and cleat system, a rear sliding glass window, LED bed lights, and LED interior lights. This package also contains some significant infotainment upgrades, which we’ll cover in the last section.
The Night is aptly named for its blacked-out exterior, but this trim amounts to more than mere aesthetics as it also gets the contents of the Activity Package plus leatherette upholstery and side steps. The debuting XRT builds off the fully optioned SEL with leatherette upholstery, Digital Key, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, bed-top side rails, and wider fender flares. Sitting at the top of the range, the Limited reverts to the standard fender flares and rail-less bed but brings in leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a HomeLink universal garage door opener, 64-color ambient interior lighting, dual second-row USB ports, and rear AC vents. The bed-top side rails, wider fender flares, and side steps are available as options on trims that don’t have them as standard features.
Advanced Safety Equipment
The ’24 Santa Cruz comes with the Hyundai SmartSense suite of advanced safety technologies, which groups forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, automatic high beams, driver attention warning, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, safe exit warning, and rear occupant alert. The XRT has a more advanced forward collision system with cyclist and junction turning detection, plus adaptive cruise control and speed limit assist. As the most loaded trim, the Limited gets a blind-spot view monitor, highway driving assist, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The default infotainment system in the ’24 Santa Cruz consists of an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. The SEL adds SiriusXM satellite radio, but with the Activity Package, it will also receive a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, manually plugged-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless connectivity is incompatible with the navigation system), and voice recognition, which all comes standard in the remaining trims. Only the Limited receives a high-end Bose audio system.
