Coming off its freshman year, the Genesis Coupe’s revised lineup drops from seven to six models, including the new 3.8 R-Spec. The new model joins five others, three with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and two with the 3.8-liter V-6. The model lineup now includes the 2.0T with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic; 2.0T R-Spec, which only comes with the six-speed manual transmission; 2.0T Premium, five-speed automatic only; 3.8 R-Spec, six-speed manual only; 3.8 Grand Touring six-speed automatic only; and the 3.8 Track, six-speed manual or automatic. All are rear-wheel drive.
Starting with the same 3.8-liter, V-6 engine as the other 3.8 models, the R-Spec adds the bigger Brembo brakes and more aggressively tuned suspension of the Track model. The engine produces 306 horsepower and 223 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission (there is no automatic option), which delivers a top speed of 149 mph. The R-Spec also uses a Torsen limited-slip differential, befitting its serious approach to performance built into the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Alexandria enthusiast drivers owe it to themselves to test drive this sports coupe.
The R-Spec rides on 19-inch wheels with front-to-back staggered width high-performance Bridgestone RE050A tires. Among the features shared among all Genesis Coupe models are stability and traction control; four-wheel antilock Brembo disc brakes with electronic force distribution and brake assist; six airbags; quick-ratio, hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering. Springs, dampers and anti-sway bars are upgraded and a front strut brace added for more aggressive handling on the R-Spec. Front camber adjustment bolts are included and can be installed by your Hyundai dealer Alexandria. Genesis Coupe is designed from the ground up for outstanding performance. Virginia is home to one of America’s most challenging racetracks, Virginia International Raceway.
Comfort and convenience equipment includes AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with XM Satellite Radio with iPod/USB and MP3 auxiliary input jacks; steering-wheel mounted audio controls; Bluetooth hands-free phone; power windows, locks and mirrors; and air conditioning. The R-Spec drops automatic headlights, cruise control and some interior accents to reduce weight and complexity. The 3.8’s power-to-weight ratio is 11.1 pounds per horsepower or 191.25 horsepower per ton. It’s a better ratio than the BMW 335i, Camaro LS or Dodge Challenger. No pretense, no nostalgia; that’s Genesis Coupe. Alexandria area residents can test drive any of the 2011 Hyundai Coupe models at Pohanka Hyundai.
