The 2013 Hyundai Sonata
is a midsize sedan that competes with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Ford Fusion in the crowded family-car segment. The five-seat Sonata was completely redesigned for the 2011 model year, receiving much more distinctive styling and better gas mileage. A hybrid model is also available. If you're looking for more spirited driving, the Sonata Turbo comes with a 274-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. For 2013, the Sonata receives minimal changes with the exception of the discontinued six-speed manual transmission, which leaves the six-speed automatic as the only transmission. Other minor changes include the addition of heated front seats for all Sonatas except the GLS trim, and a choice of two sunroofs — regular or panoramic — for the Limited trim. The Sonata's exterior has several chrome trim pieces, from the wide grille to the elongated window line. A sloping roof shows glimpses of the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and the Volkswagen CC, yet it's distinctive enough to stand out among direct competitors like the Camry and Accord. Exterior features include: High-tech features such as satellite radio, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, Hyundai's BlueLink emergency communication system, and auxiliary and USB inputs are standard. • 198-hp (200 hp in SE), 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine ,Four-cylinder features direct injection for better gas mileage, more power and lower emissions. Six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the S.
The 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with a 30-kilowatt electric motor for a total output of 209 hp, which is slightly more than the base four-cylinder Sonata's output. The car gets an EPA-estimated 35/40 mpg city/highway. There's a litany of visual changes versus the regular Sonata that include a large, hexagonal front air dam; unique headlights and taillights; new side sills; and the requisite hybrid badges. Inside, an LCD screen shows energy flow between the drivetrain components, as well as indicators for electric mode, battery charge and gas mileage.
The 2013 Hyundai Sonata Turbo: True to its name, the Sonata 2.0T has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes a V-6-like 274 hp and 269 pounds-feet of torque. It's rated at 22/34 mpg and doesn't need premium gas. Available in SE or Limited trim levels, the 2.0T uses a six-speed automatic. Both trims get 18-inch alloy wheels and dual tailpipes.
The 2013 Hyundai Elantra With seating for up to five, the compact Elantra's looks and fuel efficiency — it's rated at 40 mpg on the highway — make it a compelling choice in the segment. The Elantra is available as a four-door sedan, a coupe or a four-door hatchback. New coupe and four-door hatchback versions of the Elantra debut for 2013. In addition, the base Elantra GLS sedan now has standard air conditioning, 16-inch wheels, cruise control and a telescoping steering wheel. The Elantra Limited sedan gets a standard power driver's seat with lumbar support and available dual-zone automatic climate control. Even though it's a sedan, the Elantra has the look of a coupe. The roofline slopes gracefully down to the trunk lid, and the rising belt line makes a sharp upturn at the rear or the car, giving the rear side windows a triangular shape. This diminishes backseat-passenger visibility, but it gives the car a distinctive and sporty shape. Pronounced fender flares, 16-inch steel wheels standard; 17-inch alloy wheels optional, Standard heated side mirrors, Available automatic headlights, Available power moonroof, Available fog lights. Sweeping dashboard lines and a center console that rises to meet the dash lend a modern appearance to the sedan. A high-resolution touch-screen navigation system that incorporates a backup camera is optional, and the screen is mounted high on the dash. Interior features include:Standard cloth seats; heated leather seats optional,Choice of two-tone interiors,Remote keyless entry,CD stereo with USB and auxiliary inputs,60/40-split folding backseat,14.8-cubic-foot trunk.
The Elantra is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that's rated at 148 horsepower and gets an EPA-estimated 29/40 mpg city/highway whether you get the standard six-speed manual or the optional six-speed automatic. Mechanical features include:Uses regular gas,Front-wheel drive,Available push-button start,Standard safety features include:All-disc antilock brakes,Side-impact airbags for the front seats,Front and rear side curtain airbags,Electronic stability system with traction control,Tire pressure monitoring system.
2013 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback, Hyundai's four-door hatchback GT replaces the previous Elantra Touring. The GT now looks more like the sedan than the previous wagon-like Touring model did. The GT has rear seats that fold to create 51 cubic feet of cargo room. The cargo space is on the larger side compared with other hatchbacks: The same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine from the Elantra sedan is used with a choice of automatic or manual transmissions. Hyundai is shooting for a sportier driving experience than the sedan in the GT, so a stiffer suspension has unique shocks for improved body motion control. The optional Style Package gives the suspension sportier tuning for the package's 17-inch wheels. Drivers can choose from three steering modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport, which adjusts the power-steering assist for varying levels of steering-wheel tightness.
2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe, The Elantra coupe hopes to gain youthful buyers looking for a sportier compact car. The coupe uses the same engine and transmissions as the sedan to hit mileage ratings up to 40 mpg with a manual transmission. There are two fewer doors, but that doesn't mean Hyundai has sacrificed space inside. The coupe's interior dimensions are close to the sedan's dimensions, plus the coupe's trunk is just as large as the sedan's sizable cargo area of 14.8 cubic feet.
2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Hyundai redesigned the Santa Fe for 2013, splitting the lineup into two SUVs with separate size and styling: the two-row, four-cylinder Santa Fe Sport and the three-row, V-6 Santa Fe. This report covers the Santa Fe Sport. The Santa Fe is covered separately in the Cars.com Research section. Boasting available all-wheel drive with a torque vectoring system to enhance handling — similar to all-wheel-drive systems employed by BMW and Acura — the Santa Fe Sport gets a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It slots between the smaller Hyundai Tucson and the larger Santa Fe. Competitors include the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano.
The Santa Fe Sport looks similar to the Santa Fe but 8.5 inches shorter. The Sport has a similar hexagonal grille, but the beltline takes a sharper angle upward at the rear-quarter windows. Chrome trim along the grille and door handles is standard, as are body-colored mirrors. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard, while turbocharged models get 19-inch wheels.
Hyundai says it cut 266 pounds from the Santa Fe Sport versus its four-cylinder, front-drive Santa Fe predecessor. The weight loss grows to 300 pounds when you compare the turbo Santa Fe Sport to the V-6 Santa Fe. That's no small feat, and Hyundai says it marks the largest weight loss through a redesign in company history.
The Santa Fe Sport's interior looks similar to the confines within other Hyundai cars, with plenty of overlapping materials and an angular, sweeping panel that houses climate and audio controls. The standard cloth seats have stain-resistant fabric. Behind the rear seat is 35.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Sliding second-row seats and a heated steering wheel are optional; so is a panoramic moonroof. Turbo models get keyless access with push-button start. A CD stereo with USB/iPod compatibility is standard. Hyundai's Blue Link telecommunications system with three months of service is standard (a subscription is required thereafter). The optional navigation system has an 8-inch screen with Hyundai's latest generation of navigation. Hyundai says the system's voice recognition can pick up addresses with streets and cities in the same sentence.
Under the Hood,The Santa Fe Sport's base engine, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, uses direct injection to make an estimated 190 horsepower. A six-speed automatic is standard. Hyundai expects the Santa Fe to get 33 mpg in EPA highway ratings with front-wheel drive, which beats other small SUVs. The turborcharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is estimated to produce 264 hp. Drive-selectable steering can alter power-steering assist to improve feedback on curvy roads or reduce steering effort in city gridlock. Turbo models get upgraded shock absorbers. An Active Eco button modifies accelerator sensitivity and transmission response to improve real-world gas mileage. With either engine, the Santa Fe Sport can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
